Listed as age 32, which makes his birth in 1817 or 1818. The census record is incorrect based on his biography as well as cemtery records, which both list his date as 1816, making him the probable first-born of Adolph.
Adolph was ... a son of Benjamin and Susannah (Miller) Schmachtenberger, the former of whom was born in Canton township, Stark county, Ohio, in 1816, while the latter was born in Paris, that county, where the respective families were founded in the early pioneer era.

SCHMACHTENBERGER, Benjamin, b. June 1816, d. Aug. 15, 1895, aged 79y, 1m, 15d. [Birth month listed on tombstone; birth day of 30 from calculations based on age at death]
Smottenburger, Benjamin; Ohio; Williams County; Pulaski Twp; 170; 1850 and 1851
In the obiturary for Andrew, his brother, it says: Mr. [Andrew] Schmachtenberger was a native of Starke County, Ohio, where he was born November 30, 1826. He was the seventh child in a family of 11 children and was the last of the children to pass away. [this information shows that Benjamin died before 1911]
Benjamin died after the birthday party for Susanna in 1888 and before Andrew died in 1911.
Regarding Benjamin: He carried forward the work reclaiming and cultivating his farm, and did more or less work at his trade, becoming one of the most influential and honored citizens of Pulaski township, where he continued to reside until his death, which occurred on August 15, 1894.

Adolph was ... a son of Benjamin and Susannah (Miller) Schmachtenber, the former of whom was born in Canton township, Stark county, Ohio, in 1816, while the latter was born in Paris, that county, where the respective families were founded in the early pioneer era. The father was reared to manhood in Stark county, where he received a good common-school education, and also learned the carpenter trade. In 1846, he came to Williams county and secured a quarter section of wild and heavily timbered land in section 33, Pulaski township, no roads having as yet been constructed in this now beautiful and opulent section of the county. After thus locating his embryonic farm he returned to Stark county, where he was shortly afterward married, and in 1847 he came with his young wife to Williams county and took up his residence in Bryan, where he worked at his trade about seven years, in the meanwhile hiring men to do some clearing on his farm. He finally took up his residence on the homestead, having erected a two-room log house, eighteen by twenty-four feet in dimensions, and this continued to be the family domicile until 1869, when he erected the substantial brick house which is still standing, haveing manufactured the necessary brick on the farm. He carried forward the work reclaiming and cultivating his farm, and did more or less work at his trade, becoming one of the most influential and honored citizens of Pulaski township, where he continued to reside until his death, which occurred on August 15, 1894. His first wife died on October 14, 1889, and he later married Johanna Griener, a widow, of Richland county, O., and she survived him, passing the closing years of her life in Michigan. No children were born of the second marriage, and of the seven children of the first union only two are living. The names of the children are here entered in order of birth: Cleophas, Adolph, Rudolph, Ada, Samuel and Simon (twins), and Ida.
Regarding Benjamin: In 1846, he came to Williams county and secured a quarter section of wild and heavily timbered land in section 33, Pulaski township, no roads having as yet been constructed in this now beautiful and opulent section of the county. After thus locating his embryonic farm he returned to Stark county, where he was shortly afterward married, and in 1847 he came with his young wife to Williams county and took up his residence in Bryan.
