So. Bend Weekly, 3 Mar. 1888, page 7. "The Late Michael Slough." Again death has entered the circle of the Slough brothers and taken from their number "Mike," as he was always called. He died of consumption Saturday last, February 18th., at his home in Carson, eight miles southeast of the city, where he has lived for about twenty-five years. He was in his 45 year, and had been invalid for nearly four years, although he did not give up until about two weeks before he died. He was never heard to murmur or complain, but always preserved a cheerful disposition. He was a man of great activity and good judgement, always doing everything in his power to build up the neighborhood in which he lived. He was united in marriage to Mary (sic) Schmachtenberger (sic) in 1868: four children were born to them, two sons and two daughters. His wife and two daughters are left to mourn his loss. He was always kind and affectionate in his family, even on his death bed planning all his business that might be attended to in such a way as to shield his wife from unnecessary trouble. He was one of a family of 14 children; six brothers and one sister still survive him. His brothers, Martin, David, Valentine, and Adam, are all residents of this county, and Mrs. Rogers, his sister, of this city. His oldest brother Fred, moved from here several years ago and resides Loncoln, Neb., but arrivied here a few days before his death. He was a member of Co. G. 155th Indiana volunteers. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. N. D. Williamson, this being his request before his death. The pall bearers were Dr. Fink, H. Deppen, S. Palmer, E. Palmer, P. Shafer and Z. Leonard. The singing was conducted by the Leach family with Miss Grace Johnson, organist. The large concourse of people attending the funeral testified to the high esteem in which he was held, and in the words of Rev. N. D. Williamson, a neighborhood is truly bereaved in the loss of such a man. [NE.23c25]

SJV, 7 Jan. 1869, P-3, "Married," In Union township, December 31st, 1868, at the residence of the brides mother, by Elder Christian Wenger. Mr. Michael Slough, to Sarah Schmochtenberger. Michael saw eight of his brothers commit matrimony before he could consent to become a Benedict. Our sincere wish is that neither bride nor bridegroom may ever be less happy then they were on the occasion of the above event. The printers were kindly remembered, for which, accept much thanks [sic].
